چکیده

Home Island is one of the two main inhabited islands of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, situated about 2800 km north-west of Perth. The island has an average elevation of approximately 2 m above MSL and supports a population of about 450. The geology of the island consists of coral sediments overlying a volcanic seamount. The upper sediments are of primary importance from a hydrogeological viewpoint. These sediments consist of unconsolidated coral sands and other fragments and coral limestone. An unconformity between the younger (Holocene) unconsolidated sediments and older (Pleistocene) coral limestone was found at depths between 10 m to more than 17 m. The island has a long term average annual rainfall of 1950 mm. Water supply is based primarily on groundwater extraction from a local freshwater lens and supplementary rainwater is collected from roofs. Groundwater is currently extracted via seven galleries. A recent study based on a two dimensional model (using the SUTRA package), simulating impacts of various level of pumping up to 200 m day−1 determined the sustainable yield as 140 m day−1. This paper describes progress regarding the development of a three-dimensional model of the freshwater lens using the SALTFLOW package, by discretising the aquifer to about 90 000 nodes and 83 000 elements. This is followed by the steady-state calibration of the model, estimation of the parameters affecting the system and assessing the sustainable yield of the lens. Preliminary results of the three dimensional modelling suggest that the sustainable extraction rate is less than 200 m day−1, which is consistent with the results of the two dimensional modelling. This research project is continuing towards simulation of tidal forces, transient calibration of the model over a 10 year period from January 1988 to December 1997, estimation of sustainable yield of freshwater lens and simulation of various management options.  1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. Constraints on the Use of Three-Dimensional Models for the Simulation of Dynamic Freshwater Lenses

Freshwater lenses are the major sources of water supply in many atoll islands in the Pacific and Indian oceans, particularly in dry seasons. Presently, numerous twoand three-dimensional mathematical models are available for the simulation of atoll island aquifers. The two-dimensional models such as the powerful SUTRA are unable to represent the three dimensional distribution of various paramete...

Three-dimensional Variable-density Flow Simulation of a Coastal Aquifer in Southern Oahu, Hawaii, Usa

The main population centre of the volcanic Hawaiian-island chain in the north-central Pacific Ocean is on the island of Oahu (population about 900,000) (Figure 1). Oahu depends on ground water, which is mainly produced from coastal aquifers, for its potable-water supply. Oahu has high rainfall, highly permeable aquifers, and a coastal confining layer that results in high heads at the coast and ...

Three-Dimensional Simulation of Airflow and Nano-Particle Beam Focusing in Aerodynamic Lenses(RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper airflow, nano-and micro-particle motions in an aerodynamic particle beam focusing system consisting of several lenses, a nozzle and the downstream chamber, was studied. A three-dimensional numerical simulation for the system was presented and the compressible airflow and thermal conditions in the aerodynamic lens system were evaluated. Dilute particle concentration was assumed so ...

Sustainable Use of Laura Lens during Drought

Laura Island, which is located about 50 km away from downtown, is a source of water supply in Majuro atoll, which is the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Low and flat Majuro atoll has neither river nor lake. It is very important for Majuro atoll to ensure the conservation of its water resources. However, upconing, which is the process of partial rising of the freshwater-saltwate...

Three-Dimensional Simulation of Qeshm Channel Currents

Qeshm Channel is a shallow and narrow waterway located between Qeshm Island and the mainland in the vicinity of Hormuzgan Province, Islamic Republic of Iran. This channel is important because of its economic, industrial, fisheries and navigation role it plays as well as environmental issues it presents in the region. A prognostic study was performed to simulate currents in this channel, using C...
